Information on Foundation, GP Training Schemes and our Simulation facility

Foundation Training Scheme

The Foundation Programme is part of the continuum of medical education. It is the only point in medical training which is common to all United Kingdom medical students and doctors and ensures that newly qualified doctors develop their clinical and professional skills in the workplace in readiness for core, specialty or general practice training.

Why Mid Yorkshire?

The Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust is well situated offering access to some of the best scenery, attractions and local night life in the UK through our vast motorway, rail and airport links.

Feedback from Foundation trainees is always positive and encouraging with excellent training opportunities across their 2 year Foundation Programme and enhanced subspecialty generic teaching in Medicine, Surgery and Community posts.

Foundation Trainees can obtain a vast array of help and support from Educational and Clinical Supervisors on the ward. With experienced and approachable Foundation Tranining Programme Directors and friendly Foundation Co-ordinators, trainees can rest assured knowing there is always someone to turn to.

All our posts are on a 3 year scheme and have 18 months of general practice and 18 months hospital training on a 6 monthly rotation commencing in August and February each year. The hospital posts available are in General and Elderly Medicine, Emergency Medicine, ENT, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Psychiatry, Paediatrics.and Palliative Care.

We have 6 experienced local GPs as Training Programme Directors facilitating our teaching days and 2 Administration staff who are based at Pinderfields Hospital.

Simulation

We are fortunate enough to have an excellent simulation centre here at MESH, comprising of three simulation suites and a skills lab. Our continued aim is to provide broadening opportunities for non technical and human factors training, as well as medical and surgical skills teaching.

Postgraduate Skills Lab

Frequently used on our medical and surgical skills courses, this room allows trainees to practice simple and complex procedures in a wet lab setting. Coupled with integrated projection and Smart Board facilities, the skills lab offers a great teaching environment.

Simulation Suites 1 & 2

These two suites comprise of a simulated ward with two Sim Man 3G® high fidelity manikins and three Sim Man ALS® medium fidelity manikins. The adjoining feedback room offers integrated audio visual technology.

Our simulation scenarios are programmed to suit the needs of the course or setting and cater for a wide range of multi-disciplinary specialties. Every course and event is supported by experienced admin and technical staff, ensuring any learning that takes place, does so seamlessly and is of a high quality.

Simulation Suite 3

We have a large selection of Simbionix virtual reality simulators available for use by trainees, consultants and surgeons including:

  • Arthro Mentor
  • GI/Bronch Mentor
  • Hyst Sim
