Led by the Director of Medical Education, Dr Reshad Khodabocus, our responsibility is to fulfil the requirements of the educational contract between the Trust, NHS England (Yorkshire and the Humber) and the medical schools of Leeds and Sheffield universities.
We do this by ensuring that junior doctors and medical students are educated, trained and motivated to play their part in a first class, modern health service. Through education we aim to improve the quality of patient care.
Housed in the Trust Headquarters and Education Centre, a purpose built centre providing multidisciplinary education, training, conference, meeting and exhibition facilities.
Opened in 2011 the Education Centre is designed to welcome those with special needs and provides disabled toilets, baby changing and a lift to all floors. A light and airy atmosphere welcomes users to our seven Seminar Rooms, accommodating groups of 12 to 30 people with a number of rooms having flexible partitions to enable larger groups and exhibitions to be considered.
The Seminar Rooms are housed on the ground floor along with a 170 seated cinema-styled, tiered lecture theatre with state-of-the-art projection facilities, including triple projection and video conferencing controlled by a computerised lectern.
The Lecture Theatre is also fitted with hearing loops. All our rooms are well equipped with audiovisual equipment which provides projection facilities with interactive whiteboards, flipcharts, and a mobile video conferencing unit. A number of our rooms are equipped with built-in recording equipment.
An Audiovisual Technician can be arranged to help with all your technical requirements. He can offer you advice and provide suitable equipment giving you the best solution to meet your needs.
We always aim to be as flexible as possible and would welcome the opportunity to arrange for you to visit the Centre prior to your meeting to discuss your individual requirements.
The Oakwell Centre for Learning and Development is a modern, multi-disciplinary training / conference / meeting facility with state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment (PC or laptop and LCD projector in every room, PACS facility, videoconferencing facilities, wireless access). The Centre’s décor and furnishings are maintained to a high standard and a team of friendly staff are on hand to assist with your event. Room bookings are made via the receptionist, who will also book any hospitality required for your event after discussion regarding menus, dietary requirements, budget etc.
Over the last 10 years, we have been fortunate to acquire a state of the art education centre and have developed a highly respected multi-professional team of creative and educational staff, with a core team supported by a wider medical education admin and managerial family. Our simulation facilities have been massively extended and are now in almost continual use in order to provide the safest possible training and patient care. We have been able to welcome new roles of staff, particularly Physician Associates for whom we provide an integral part of their training and will be welcoming student PAs from next year. We have also developed a Matron in Medical Education, who has created an Engagement process to reach out to junior doctors, assisted by a Clinical Leadership Fellow whose remit includes developing trainee wellbeing and pastoral support.
The pandemic has affected us all in various ways but on a positive note has also allowed us to invest in and improve our use of videoconferencing, remote teaching and development of a wider variety of communication methods, including podcasts, many of which will be available through this website.
This is an opportunity for me to publically thank the medical education staff for their continued excellent dedicated work which is so well regarded by trainees and trainers, past and present. This new website is a continued expression of the dedicated and excellent performance of the MESH team and we hope it will be useful, informative and fun to use.
