Senior Clinical Teacher

Fiona Coia

I am a Senior Clinical Teacher based at the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust. I have worked in the Trust since 1989, initially as a nurse, working in Plastic Surgery, Burn care and for a brief time Vascular Surgery.
In 2008, I moved to Medical Education to work with Undergraduate Medical students from the University of Leeds. I primarily work with Years 1-3 and Year 5 teaching history taking, examination (based on Body Systems) and clinical skills.
I thoroughly enjoy all aspects of the job, from teaching, simulation, OSCE preparation and examination to developing different aspects of the curriculum and placements, and taking a pastoral role in working with the different year groups. Of course, none of this would be possible without the great support and hard work of our clinical and non-clinical colleagues across the Trust who invest their time and skill in the medical students which makes a huge difference to their development.
One of my biggest joys (when Covid allows!!) is going to Leeds to see the 5th year medical students graduate and become our future junior Doctors- it makes all the hard work over the years seem worthwhile and it is lovely to see them progress in their chosen careers.
I also support some Postgraduate simulation, Inter-professional learning, teaching and work on other courses when the opportunity arises which I enjoy!
